OMSI’s Science Playground: Where Portland’s Littlest Scientists Begin

Tucked inside OMSI is a museum within the museum, designed for the under-six crowd and celebrated nationally as a model of early science learning. The Science Playground invites toddlers and preschoolers to pour, splash, build and pretend their way into physics and biology.

Water tables ripple with boats and dams, a giant sandbox hides fossils to excavate, and a pint-sized village — grocery, construction site, stage — turns dramatic play into social science. A separate soft-play area keeps crawlers safe while they explore textures and motion.

For Portland parents, it’s a rainy-day headquarters and a first membership many families ever buy. Every great scientist starts somewhere — in Portland, they start here, with wet sleeves and big questions.
