Museum of the Oregon Territory: River Views and Pioneer Stories in Oregon City

Perched above Willamette Falls — the second most powerful waterfall in North America by volume — the Museum of the Oregon Territory surveys the ground where Oregon’s story turned. This valley was a crossroads of Indigenous nations for thousands of years before becoming the seat of the first American territorial government west of the Rockies.

Exhibits weave Native heritage, the fur trade, missionaries, land claims and the paper-mill century into one flowing narrative, all framed by windows that keep the roaring falls in view. The Stevens Crawford House next door preserves an intact 1908 family home.

Pair it with a ride on Oregon City’s municipal elevator — the only outdoor one in America — for a history day trip that feels like a small adventure.
