One Last Season for a Pittsburgh Treasure: PBT’s ‘The Nutcracker’ December 4–27

All good traditions deserve a grand farewell. Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker returns to the Benedum Center December 4–27, 2026 — the final year of Terrence S. Orr’s beloved production, which has set Tchaikovsky’s classic in turn-of-the-century Pittsburgh for more than twenty years. An all-new production arrives in 2027; this December is the last dance for a local legend.

Orr’s staging is Pittsburgh to its bones: Marie and her Nutcracker Prince journey through swirling snow to a Land of Enchantment filled with hundreds of colorful characters, the Sugar Plum Fairy and that score — performed with the warmth of a hometown holiday card. Generations of Pittsburgh families have started their Christmas here.

The Nutcracker runs December 4–27 at the Benedum Center downtown, with matinee and evening performances (run time about 2 hours 10 minutes). Tickets at pbt.org — the farewell year will be popular, so book early.
