Contemporary Craft: Free Exhibitions and Hands-On Making in the Strip District

Big art, human scale, free admission: the Society for Contemporary Craft has championed the art of the handmade since 1971, and its light-filled gallery in the Strip District presents museum-caliber exhibitions of contemporary craft — fiber, metal, wood, ceramics and work that defies every category.

Beyond the gallery, the center’s studios hum with workshops for all levels, its store showcases work by hundreds of artists (the best handmade shopping in Pittsburgh), and community programs bring craft into schools and neighborhoods citywide. It’s a working argument that making things by hand matters more than ever.

Contemporary Craft is at 5645 Butler Street in the Strip District/Lawrenceville edge, free and open to the public. Exhibitions and workshop schedules are at contemporarycraft.org.
