Fort Pitt Museum: Where Pittsburgh Began, at the Point

Stand in the bastion at the Point and you stand at the beginning of Pittsburgh. The Fort Pitt Museum, set within Point State Park in a recreated bastion of the original fort, tells the story of the French and Indian War and the frontier crossroads where two rivers made an empire’s prize.

The museum’s dioramas, artifacts and films trace the 1750s struggle for the Forks of the Ohio — Fort Duquesne, Braddock’s defeat, Forbes’ campaign and the construction of Fort Pitt, then the largest British fort in North America. Outside, the park’s lawns trace the fort’s full outline, and the museum’s living-history programs bring redcoats and traders back to the Point on event weekends.

The Fort Pitt Museum is operated by the Heinz History Center at Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh. Hours and admission details are at heinzhistorycenter.org.
