The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum: A Cathedral for Champions

Where else would a city this devoted to its teams put its sports memory? The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, inside the Heinz History Center, gives the region’s athletic legends a full museum treatment — and Pittsburgh responds like it’s a hall of fame, because it is.

The galleries hit every Pittsburgh emotion: the Immaculate Reception, Mario Lemieux and the Penguins’ Cups, the Steelers’ six Super Bowls, Bill Mazeroski’s 1960 World Series-winning home run (the bat and ball are here), Roberto Clemente’s greatness, and the region’s Olympians, boxers and high school heroes. Interactive exhibits let kids try the broadcast booth, a Zamboni photo op and training challenges.

The Sports Museum is part of the Senator John Heinz History Center at 1212 Smallman Street in the Strip District, included with admission. Details at heinzhistorycenter.org.
