Arizona Opera is inviting Phoenix families to fall in love with opera through one of the most beloved tales of all time. El Gato con Botas (Puss in Boots), the charming one-act opera by Spanish composer Xavier Montsalvatge with libretto by Néstor Luján, arrives in Phoenix on November 7 and 8 as part of the company’s joyful 55th anniversary season.
Based on Charles Perrault’s classic story and performed entirely in Spanish with both English and Spanish supertitles, this one-hour adventure follows a clever, swashbuckling cat who — armed with only a hat, a sword and a pair of boots — sets out to win a kingdom and a bride for his humble master. With lively Spanish rhythms, colorful melodies and piano accompaniment, it is the perfect first opera for kids and a treat for grown-ups too.
The production stars the entire Marion Roose Pullin Arizona Opera Studio and forms part of the McDougall Arizona Opera Fall Series. Performances in Phoenix: Saturday, November 7 at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM, and Sunday, November 8 at 2:00 PM. And the fun comes with a heart: audiences are invited to bring gently used or new shoes, or new socks, to support St. Vincent de Paul’s mission of providing footwear to those in need.
