Every year, more than 360 world-class performances light up the stage at the MIM Music Theater — and behind every one of them is a devoted team working in perfect harmony to make the magic happen. The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix is celebrating the unsung heroes who turn each concert into an unforgettable night, from the first sound check to the final applause.
Under the leadership of artistic director Andrew Walesch, the theater hosts acclaimed musicians from around the globe, spanning every genre, culture and musical tradition. Long before the doors open, production manager Nick Cecconi coordinates the technical details with artists and their managers, making sure every show runs flawlessly. Theater technician Laura Smith takes to the catwalks to focus the spotlights and design the lighting that sets each performance aglow.
The care extends far beyond the stage. Hospitality coordinator Carrie Willis looks after every detail of the artists’ stay in Phoenix — accommodations, transportation, food and the backstage experience — so performers can focus entirely on their music. Friendly concierges Edwin Sarratt, Jeff Insel, Jim Thornton and Mark DePue welcome artists to the city, transport instruments and gear, and handle day-of-show needs. Up front, house managers Belle Winsor and Victoria Schwentick lead the volunteer team of ushers and merch staff, with chimes signaling the moment showtime arrives.
“Every night is a performance that people have been looking forward to for weeks or even months, and we never take that for granted,” says Cecconi. “We always want to set the artist up for success.” Walesch adds it best: “The room is extraordinary, but it’s the people who make it sing.” In Phoenix, happy news sounds like this.
