A quarter century ago, Philadelphia set out to build a world-class home for the performing arts on the Avenue of the Arts. When the Kimmel Center opened its doors in December 2001, its sweeping glass barrel vault instantly became one of the city’s most beloved landmarks. Now, 25 years later, the center has welcomed more than 10 million people to performances, civic celebrations and educational programs — and the party is just getting started.
Today the Kimmel Center is the beating heart of Philadelphia’s cultural life. It is the home of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the stage for resident companies including Opera Philadelphia, PHILADANCO, the Philadelphia Ballet, the Curtis Institute of Music, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Under the Ensemble Arts Philly banner, its halls host everything from Broadway hits and jazz nights to family concerts and free community events.
To mark the milestone, Ensemble Arts Philly has launched a celebration of the Kimmel Center’s first 25 years, with a look back at its impact on artists, audiences and neighborhoods — and an invitation for everyone to join in. Fans can share their favorite Kimmel memories through a special anniversary memory submission form, adding their own chapter to the story of a venue that belongs to the whole city.
