A New Canvas of Transformation: Eastern State Debuts ‘ReVision: Art and Justice’ on November 20

Philadelphia’s most beloved landmark is about to get even more inspiring. On Friday, November 20, Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site will unveil the inaugural installation of ReVision: Art and Justice, a brand-new three-year artist residency and exhibition series that puts creativity, lived experience, and transformation center stage.

The first artist to create new work at the historic site is Cody Stuhltrager, a Philadelphia artist whose work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions including the Barnes Foundation. Stuhltrager, who was formerly incarcerated, will create an original site-specific installation in dialogue with Eastern State’s powerful 10-acre campus — a place where history and hope meet. Visitors will also be able to engage with the artist through public programs as the installation evolves.

ReVision is designed to center the voices of justice-impacted artists and invite everyone to see justice, humanity, and change through a fresh lens. Over the next three years, the series will welcome three artists in total, each collaborating with Eastern State’s staff and community partners to create new work and spark meaningful conversation.

The ambitious initiative is supported by a $360,000 grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, which champions bold, imaginative, and catalytic art across Greater Philadelphia.

The installation opens November 20 and is included with regular admission. Eastern State is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2027 Fairmount Avenue. Art has a way of opening hearts — and this November, Philadelphia gets a powerful new reason to visit one of its most iconic landmarks.
