Halloween Nights Returns to Eastern State Penitentiary for a Thrilling 35th Season

Philadelphia’s spookiest fall tradition is back! Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary has launched its 35th season, turning America’s first penitentiary into the city’s most atmospheric haunted destination. The immersive nighttime experience runs on select nights from October 2 through November 7, 2026.

This year’s edition features five thrilling haunted houses, plus historic tours, themed bars and lounges, and live performances — all set inside the 10-acre walled complex of Eastern State, whose crumbling cellblocks are scary enough on their own. Every ticket sold supports the nonprofit’s mission: preserving America’s first penitentiary and advancing public understanding of the criminal justice system.

Families get their own celebration too: the beloved Fall Festival returns on Sunday, October 25, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., with trick-or-treating through the historic site, a kid-friendly scavenger hunt, story time, hands-on art activities, and live music. Admission is free for kids in costume and their caregivers, and no registration is needed.

October at Eastern State is packed beyond the scares: the site just hosted a free-admission “Firstival” celebrating its legacy as America’s first penitentiary, and its Indigenous Peoples’ Weekend (October 9–12) adds special tours examining the justice system’s impact on Indigenous people. Tickets for Halloween Nights are on sale now at easternstate.org/halloween.
