Wave Hill Celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Weekend with Free Admission, Nature Walks and Hands-On Workshops

One of New York’s most beautiful green escapes is honoring Indigenous communities this weekend. Wave Hill, the beloved 28-acre public garden and cultural center in Riverdale, Bronx, is celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Weekend from October 10 through 12 with three days of family-friendly programming.

Visitors can join nature walks, hands-on activities such as traditional corn husk doll workshops, and a special walking tour highlighting the female Lenape Saunksquas (chieftains) and their role in the 15th-century Dutch-Indigenous alliance. Throughout the weekend, programs explore the important role of plants and food in Indigenous cultures.

To make the celebration open to everyone, Wave Hill is offering free admission to all visitors on Monday, October 12, the holiday itself. Set along the Hudson River with sweeping views across the Palisades, the gardens are at their autumn best right now, with fall foliage lighting up every path — making this weekend a perfect fall outing for the whole family.

All activities are free with admission. Advance registration is required for some programs, so visitors should check Wave Hill’s schedule before heading out.
