Couturie Forest: A Wild, Green Escape Inside New Orleans City Park

New Orleans hides a real forest in the middle of the city. Couturie Forest, inside City Park and combined with Scout Island, covers 60 acres of native trees, scenic waterways and quiet trails where the city noise simply fades away.

City Park calls it home to eight distinct ecosystems, and birders love it for good reason: the forest was named the city’s top bird-watching destination, and visitors commonly spot 40 species or more in a single outing. Along the trails you can expect countless varieties of trees, fish and birds, plus peaceful lagoons that make every walk feel like a small expedition.

The forest is also home to New Orleans’ highest point of elevation, Laborde Mountain, at a playful 27 feet above sea level. It is a beautiful place to wander with kids, family and friends, get some easy exercise and learn about the park’s rich natural landscape.

Best of all, it is open daily and free to explore, right off Harrison Avenue. Pack a picnic, bring binoculars and enjoy one of the happiest green secrets in New Orleans.
