Shimmer: Dreaming the Posthuman Opens a Dreamlike New World at the Frist Art Museum

Nashville’s art lovers are in for a dazzling fall. The Frist Art Museum has opened Shimmer: Dreaming the Posthuman, an immersive exhibition where 17 contemporary artists use analog craft and cutting-edge technology to explore the beautiful connections between humans, other species, and the earth itself. The show is on view in the Frist’s Ingram Gallery from September 25, 2026, through January 3, 2027.

From digital animation and augmented reality to motion capture and generative software, the works transform the gallery into a luminous dreamscape: extinct species virtually reappear, machines mingle with slime and microbes, and glowing avatars drift through fantastic landscapes. The exhibition unfolds in three sections. Endangered Species invites empathy for the creatures we share the planet with, including Marguerite Humeau’s sculptural marine life-form Kuroshio and a digital recreation of an extinct white rhino. Dreams and Metamorphosis turns surreal visions into poetry, with Jacolby Satterwhite’s 3D animation We Are in Hell When We Hurt Each Other filling the room with joyous, voguing robots. Everything Is Connected imagines healing futures through human and machine collaboration.

Organized by the Frist Art Museum and curated by Chief Curator Mark Scala, the exhibition features artists including Ian Cheng, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Josèfa Ntjam, and Saya Woolfalk. Families can dive in together at Martin ArtQuest, the Frist’s award-winning art-making space, where new interactive stations inspired by the show invite visitors to draw, build, and play. It is an art experience that will spark wonder in every generation.
