Light, Flowers and Data: Robin Vuchnich’s Interactive Installation Blooms at the Frist

Nashville’s Frist Art Museum is lighting up the season with a dazzling new exhibition that turns science into poetry. Robin Vuchnich: In Search of Thoreau’s Flowers—The Memory of a Season, on view in the Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery from September 25, 2026, through January 3, 2027, is an interactive, light-based installation celebrating environmental stewardship and the wonder of biodiversity.

Clarksville-based new-media artist Robin Vuchnich brings the natural world to life through projection mapping, video art and creative coding — no artificial intelligence, just imagination and real scientific data. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau, who famously collected hundreds of plant specimens around Walden Pond in the 1850s, the installation reimagines that historic collection as a large-scale visualization of how our landscape has changed. Many of the plants Thoreau pressed and preserved are now extinct or endangered in the Concord region — and Vuchnich transforms that data into a vivid, hopeful visual metaphor about caring for the natural world.

It is a rare kind of art experience: beautiful, immersive and meaningful, inviting visitors of all ages to see nature — and their role in protecting it — in a brand-new light. A perfect family outing or weekend plan in the heart of Music City, open now through the holidays.
