Elim Chan Conducts Swan Lake, Liszt and a World Premiere with the LA Phil

One of the most exciting voices in classical music is back in Los Angeles. Conductor Elim Chan — a former LA Phil Dudamel Fellow — returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall from October 16 to 18 with a program built for pure enchantment: Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake, Liszt’s fiery Second Piano Concerto, and the world premiere of a brand-new waltz by South Korean composer Donghoon Shin.

Chan’s take on Swan Lake has already charmed critics elsewhere. When she shaped her own symphonic version of the suite in San Francisco, reviewers praised her ability to make the familiar feel brand new — calling her presence as communicative as a dancer and her reading of Tchaikovsky as if she were born to conduct ballet. Now Los Angeles gets its own chance to hear this can’t-miss pairing of orchestra and ballet music.

Joining her is piano legend Yefim Bronfman in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a piece he first played as a 15-year-old in an audition that helped launch his career — and one he plays with both thunder and poetry. The evenings open with “Dance Card,” Shin’s waltz-inspired premiere commissioned by the LA Phil. Concerts are Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 18 at 2 p.m.
