L.A. Zoo Welcomes Its First Grevy’s Zebra Foal in Seven Years

There’s a brand-new bundle of stripes making hearts melt at the Los Angeles Zoo! The Zoo has welcomed a male Grevy’s zebra foal — the first Grevy’s zebra born at the Los Angeles Zoo since 2019.

The little foal was born this spring and spent his first weeks bonding closely with his mother behind the scenes. After getting comfortable with his surroundings, he’s now stepping out for guests to admire, with regular public viewing underway at the Zoo.

Like every Grevy’s zebra, he wears a stripe pattern as unique as a human fingerprint — no two zebras are ever alike! The Grevy’s is the largest of the three zebra species: adult males stand five feet tall at the shoulders and can weigh nearly 1,000 pounds. In the wild, these striking animals roam the semi-arid grasslands of southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.

This birth is a big deal for conservation. Grevy’s zebras are classified as Endangered, with wild populations down 54 percent over the last 40 years and fewer than 2,000 believed to remain. Zoo officials say the foal will help strengthen the North American population and inspire visitors to care about wildlife.

Visitors can now meet the young zebra in person and watch his playful juvenile behavior — a heartwarming reminder of why Happy City News loves celebrating our wild neighbors.
