Patti LuPone Returns to LA Opera in Bernstein’s “Candide” This Fall

One of Broadway’s brightest stars is coming back to the opera stage in Los Angeles. This fall, LA Opera welcomes three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone for a run of Leonard Bernstein’s beloved comic operetta Candide, on stage November 21 through December 13 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

LuPone takes on the role of the Old Lady, the irreverent survivor who guides young Candide through a world turned upside down. Based on Voltaire’s famous satire, the story follows the incurably optimistic Candide as he survives shipwrecks, earthquakes, the Inquisition and romantic disaster — all set to Bernstein’s sparkling, opera-meets-Broadway score.

The production promises a feast for the eyes: lavish 18th-century Rococo costumes, rapidly changing sets, and generous doses of slapstick comedy. LA Opera Resident Conductor Lina González-Granados leads the orchestra in this celebration of Bernstein’s Tony and Olivier Award-winning classic.

LuPone’s return is a homecoming of sorts. She has graced the LA Opera stage before in The Ghosts of Versailles and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, and earlier this year she thrilled Los Angeles audiences with her concert Matters of the Heart. Tickets for Candide are on sale now.
