Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve: Nine Ponds, Five Miles of Trails and Thousands of Birds Near Las Vegas

Las Vegas has a peaceful oasis where the soundtrack is birdsong instead of slot machines. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, about 140 acres on the eastern edge of the Las Vegas Valley in Henderson, is home to thousands of migratory waterfowl and resident desert birds — and it was named Best Place to Birdwatch in KNPR’s Best of the City 2024 awards.

The preserve sits within Henderson’s Water Reclamation Facility, on the eastern edge of the Pacific Migratory Flyway, so many of its feathered guests are travelers stopping to rest and refuel. Nine tranquil ponds anchor the landscape, connected by five miles of trails in paved and soft surfaces. A paved path of about three-quarters of a mile is wheelchair accessible, and the soft trails are mostly level for easy walking.

Visitors should check in, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water, a hat and sunscreen — and if you do not own binoculars, the preserve can lend you a pair on site. An outdoor classroom, educational programs and a small gift shop make it an easy, enriching stop for families and first-time birders alike.

Please remember not to feed the birds, so their natural behaviors stay wild, and note that pets are not permitted. Arrive in the morning — the preserve opens early and closes in the early afternoon — and let this desert oasis show you a calmer, feathered side of the Las Vegas area.
