The Houston Zoo has a tiny soccer star on its team — and she plays on four feet! Kirby, a nearly 2-year-old Asian elephant calf, has become a guest favorite for the adorable way she nudges and kicks a giant soccer ball across her habitat.
The playful scenes draw delighted crowds, but they are about much more than fun. The oversized ball is part of the Zoo’s carefully designed enrichment program, which supports elephant well-being by encouraging natural behaviors like coordination, curiosity, and problem-solving. This particular toy just happens to look like a massive football.
Moments like these show the Zoo’s daily commitment to giving every animal an active, stimulating life — and they make for the perfect family visit. Visitors can catch Kirby and the rest of the elephant herd in their Houston habitat, where there is always something new to watch and learn.
