Detroit Jazz Festival: The World’s Largest Free Jazz Festival, Every Labor Day Weekend

Only Detroit would give this away for free. The Detroit Jazz Festival, held every Labor Day weekend on stages across downtown and Hart Plaza, is the world’s largest free jazz festival — four days of legends and rising stars, and every note costs nothing but your time.

Founded in 1980, the festival has hosted virtually every major figure in modern jazz while staying rooted in Detroit’s own deep jazz heritage. Families spread blankets at the riverfront stages, food vendors line the streets, and the music rolls from afternoon until late night — proof that this city believes great art belongs to everyone.

The next edition returns Labor Day weekend 2027 in downtown Detroit. Artist lineups are announced in the spring at detroitjazzfest.org. Mark it down: it’s the best free weekend in American music.
