One Day in Detroit for Art and Music Lovers: DIA, Motown and Orchestra Hall

Short on time but big on culture? This one-day Detroit route strings together the city’s greatest hits. Start at 11 a.m. at the Detroit Institute of Arts, when the doors open: give yourself ninety minutes for Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals, the Great Hall’s armor, and one special exhibition. Lunch at the museum’s Kresge Court, one of the prettiest dining rooms in the city.

At 2 p.m., head to West Grand Boulevard for a guided tour of the Motown Museum (reserve online — tours sell out). You’ll end in Studio A, listening to the Funk Brothers’ story in the room where ‘My Girl’ and ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ were born. From there, it’s a short hop to Midtown for dinner on Woodward Avenue.

Cap the night at 8 p.m. with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at Orchestra Hall or a performance at the Detroit Opera House — check dso.org and detroitopera.org for the evening’s program. Art by day, music by night, and Detroit in your heart by midnight.
