Coming to Detroit for the weekend? Here’s how we’d spend it. Day one starts downtown: coffee near Campus Martius, then up Griswold to peek into the Guardian Building’s rainbow lobby. Walk the Riverwalk east to the Dequindre Cut, ride it up to Eastern Market for lunch among the sheds, and spend the afternoon at the Detroit Institute of Arts — Rivera Court, the armor court, and whatever special exhibition is on. Dinner in Greektown, then a nightcap of music: the DSO at Orchestra Hall or jazz downtown.
Day two goes west and wonderful. Morning at the Motown Museum (book ahead), standing in Studio A where the hits were made. Then cross to Dearborn for The Henry Ford: Greenfield Village’s streets and rides, or the museum’s great machines — give it at least half a day. Back in the city, catch golden hour from Belle Isle’s west end, then dinner in Corktown.
Got a third day? Add a Tigers, Lions, Pistons or Red Wings game, the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, and a slow morning in Mexicantown. Detroit rewards those who linger.
