Denver Blooms in Black Ink: Izumi Yokoyama’s ‘Realm of Wonder’ Opens at the Botanic Gardens

The Denver Botanic Gardens just gained a new reason to linger a little longer. Realm of Wonder: Izumi Yokoyama, a brand-new solo exhibition by the Japanese-born, Taos-based artist, opened on October 3 at the Bonfils-Stanton Gallery inside the Freyer-Newman Center and runs through February 7, 2027.

Yokoyama works in the meditative language of Sumi ink, and the show is a site-specific invitation to slow down and notice the fleeting poetry of nature. Monumental nocturnal ink drawings shimmer like night skies on rice paper, while delicate clay sculptures recall cherry blossom petals suspended mid-fall. The centerpiece, Night River, stretches 33 feet: from afar it flows like a river, up close it dissolves into thousands of tiny hand-drawn circles, each one placed with painstaking, meditative care.

Two pieces were created especially for this exhibition, conceived as quiet reminders that every moment, like every petal, is precious precisely because it passes. Whether you are an art lover or simply in need of a peaceful hour in the heart of the city, this is one of Denver’s loveliest fall escapes.

The exhibition is included with general admission to the Gardens. Visit the York Street location for hours and tickets.
