Children’s Theatre of Charlotte: Half a Century of Young Hearts on Stage

Founded in 1948, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte has grown into one of the largest children’s theatres in the United States — reaching some 250,000 young people a year from its home at ImaginOn. Its productions refuse to talk down: full-scale professional staging of classics, new works and culturally rich stories that tour nationally.

The Theatre’s two ImaginOn stages — the 550-seat McColl Family Theatre and the intimate Wells Fargo Playhouse — host school matinees that fill with the best audiences in the world (ask any actor), while its education programs run classes and camps for thousands of Charlotte kids, from first-timers to its celebrated teen ensemble.

Three generations of Charlotteans have gasped at the same stage magic. In this city, children’s theatre isn’t a starter art form. It’s a civic treasure.
