Talking Walls: Charlotte’s Mural Festival and the City as Canvas

Charlotte’s walls have learned to talk. Talking Walls, the city’s annual mural festival launched in 2018, invites local and international muralists to take over walls across Uptown, South End, NoDa and Plaza Midwood — leaving behind a permanent, growing open-air museum that neighbors navigate by: “turn left at the giant queen.”

The murals do what murals do best: Charlotte’s history, heroes and hopes at monumental scale, free to everyone at all hours. The Charlotte International Arts Festival each fall adds global performers and large-scale installations to the same streets, cementing the season when the whole city becomes a gallery.

New walls appear faster than tours can update. That’s not a problem — that’s the point. Charlotte’s canvas is its city, and it’s nowhere near finished.
