Theatre Charlotte: America’s Oldest Continually Producing Community Theatre

The ushers might be your neighbors; the leads might be your coworkers; the quality will surprise out-of-towners every time. Theatre Charlotte, founded in 1927, is the oldest continually producing community theatre in America — nearly a century of Charlotte citizens making Charlotte theatre on its Queens Road stage in Myers Park.

Its seasons balance the canon — A Christmas Carol is a civic institution — with musicals, comedies and contemporary plays, performed by volunteer casts whose day jobs vanish under the lights. Generations of Charlotte actors got their first applause here, and its longevity is itself the story: a city that keeps showing up for its own.

Community theatre is culture’s root system. In Charlotte, the roots run 98 years deep and still bloom every season.
