Few states can out-sing North Carolina, and its trophy case sits in Kannapolis, 30 minutes from Charlotte. The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame honors the state’s astonishing musical lineage: John Coltrane and Nina Simone, James Taylor and Earl Scruggs, Roberta Flack, Fantasia, and dozens more across jazz, soul, bluegrass, gospel and rock.
Housed in the historic Cannon Village area, the museum pairs its Hall of Honor with memorabilia, listening stations and exhibitions on the mill-town music cultures that raised these artists — the same textile-belt towns that fed Charlotte’s own growth. Its induction ceremonies each fall are pilgrimages for Carolina music faithful.
It’s a reminder that Charlotte’s music story is regional at root — and that the state that gave the world Coltrane keeps its songs close.
