Opera Carolina: The Southeast’s Grand Opera Tradition

Since 1948, Opera Carolina has filled Charlotte’s stages with the grandest emotions ever composed — and it remains the largest professional opera company in the Carolinas, performing at the Belk Theater with full orchestra, chorus and the kind of voices that make chandeliers vibrate.

Its seasons balance the eternal (La Traviata, Carmen, The Barber of Seville) with American and contemporary works, sung in productions that tour to partner cities across the region. Beyond the Belk, Opera Carolina’s education arm reaches tens of thousands of students, its Opera Xpress brings bite-size opera to schools, and pop-up performances turn breweries and markets into impromptu opera houses.

Opera in Charlotte isn’t an import — it’s a 75-year hometown tradition, sung at full voice.
