Charlotte Ballet: Dancing Between the Classics and the Cutting Edge

Charlotte Ballet dances the city’s favorite double act: the classics, honored beautifully, and the new, commissioned boldly. From its Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance in Uptown — named for its legendary artistic leadership — the company performs at the Knight Theater with a repertoire that leaps from storybook ballets to works by the world’s hottest choreographers.

Its Nutcracker is the region’s definitive holiday production, a candy-colored spectacle that introduces thousands of children to ballet each December. The rest of the season arcs through mixed repertory programs that might pair Balanchine with a world premiere in a single evening — virtuosity with adventure.

The company’s academy trains hundreds of young Charlotte dancers, many on scholarship. Grace with ambition: that’s Charlotte Ballet, and Charlotte itself.
