Fourth Ward: Charlotte’s Victorian Treasure

Charlotte demolished much of its 19th century — but the Fourth Ward survived as its Victorian valentine. Brick sidewalks wind past gingerbread cottages, Queen Anne beauties and the landmark Berryhill House, all shaded by willow oaks in Uptown’s northwest quadrant.

The neighborhood’s revival, led by residents in the 1970s who moved threatened houses onto empty lots, is a preservation legend. Today its heart is Fourth Ward Park — three acres of gardens, fountains and skyline-framed lawns — and its December Holiday Home Tour opens the famous porches to candlelit crowds.

It’s the essential Charlotte contrast: rocking chairs and wraparound porches in the foreground, banking towers behind. History didn’t just survive Uptown; it made Uptown lovable.
