Freedom Park: Charlotte’s Central Park

Ask Charlotteans for their favorite park and one name wins: Freedom Park. Ninety-eight acres between Dilworth and Myers Park roll around a seven-acre lake — fountain spraying, ducks presiding — with shaded trails, tennis courts, playgrounds and a vintage steam locomotive that generations of children have “driven.”

The park hosts Charlotte’s signature September celebration, Festival in the Park (running since 1964), when artists, musicians and food vendors ring the lake for four days. Year-round it neighbors the Charlotte Nature Museum, linking a park day to animal encounters in one easy stroll.

Wedding parties, Sunday kickball leagues, prom photos by the lake band shell — Freedom Park is where Charlotte keeps its happiest memories. Every great city needs a front lawn; this is Charlotte’s.
