Uptown’s cultural skyline is measured in marquees, and most of them belong to Blumenthal Performing Arts. The nonprofit stewards the grand Belk Theater (2,100 seats of North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center opulence), the intimate Booth Playhouse, the Knight Theater at the Levine Center, and stages across the county — the infrastructure of Charlotte’s performing life.
Through those doors pass the biggest Broadway tours (Charlotte is a top-tier touring stop), the Charlotte Symphony, Charlotte Ballet, Opera Carolina and a parade of comedians, concerts and dance companies. Blumenthal’s education programs — the Blumey Awards for high school musical theatre are the region’s Tony-night — build the next audience and the next cast.
On a show night, Tryon Street glows in sequence: dinner crowds, marquee lights, a city dressed up. That’s Blumenthal’s doing.
