The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston will be the only museum in the United States to host “Renoir and Love,” a landmark exhibition opening February 28, 2027, and running through June 13, 2027. The show celebrates the tender, joyful heart of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s art: his lifelong fascination with love in all its forms.
Co-organized with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the National Gallery in London, the exhibition brings together 40 paintings from collections around the world. It is the first exhibition ever devoted to this subject, the theme that set Renoir apart from his fellow Impressionists: friendship, family, and flirtation captured with warmth, humor, and emotional honesty.
Visitors will come face to face with beloved masterpieces, including “Moulin de la Galette” (1876), on loan from the Musée d’Orsay, and the MFA’s own “Dance at Bougival” (1883). The exhibition focuses on the years between the mid-1860s and the mid-1880s, the period when Renoir painted what are widely considered his greatest works.
Set against the backdrop of modern Paris — the banks of the Seine, cafés, gardens, restaurants, and theaters — the paintings portray people from a range of social classes, chosen with a modern eye that still feels fresh today. It is an invitation for a whole new generation to fall in love with the Impressionist master, right here in Boston.
