Boston’s contemporary art scene is about to throw itself a birthday party — and everyone is invited. The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston turns 90 this fall, and it is celebrating nine decades of bold, boundary-pushing art with not one but three brand-new exhibitions opening October 15.
The centerpiece is 90 YEARS, a joyful look back at the museum’s history through the artists and moments that made the ICA what it is today. Sharing the spotlight are two solo shows: Leilah Babirye: Embaga ya Naki ne Naki (Wedding of Naki and Naki), radiant large-scale sculptures by the celebrated Ugandan artist, and Cynthia Daignault: Valley, a luminous series of paintings that invites quiet contemplation.
The celebration kicks off with a special Opening Celebration on October 13 at 7 p.m., with a first look at the exhibitions and complimentary refreshments at the museum’s stunning waterfront home on Harbor Shore Drive. For 90 years the ICA has championed the art of our time — this fall is the perfect moment to discover why Boston fell in love with it.
