Kansas City families have a very cool date to save: Polar Bear Day at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium on Saturday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The celebration kicks off International Polar Bear Week inside Polar Bear Passage, and it is free with regular zoo admission.
The star of the day is Nuniq, the zoo’s beloved polar bear. Docents will host what the zoo calls “pawsome” activities throughout the celebration, designed especially for curious kids and their grown-ups. Families can enjoy hands-on learning with real bio-facts — the skulls, fur and other fascinating materials that help young animal lovers understand how polar bears thrive in the Arctic.
Children can also test their knowledge on the Wheel of Wonder, spinning their way through fun polar bear questions, and join in one of the day’s sweetest traditions: signing Nuniq’s “beary” big birthday card. It is a cheerful, personal way for little fans to wish their favorite bear well while learning why protecting polar bears in the wild matters.
Polar Bear Passage, at the zoo at 6800 Zoo Drive, offers wonderful viewing of these magnificent animals, making November 7 an ideal autumn outing. Come for the birthday card, stay for the learning — and leave with a new appreciation for one of the Arctic’s most amazing animals.
