The National WWII Museum Is Reinventing Its Flagship D-Day Exhibit for 2027

Great news for history lovers in New Orleans: The National WWII Museum is giving its original flagship exhibit a whole new life. The museum announced a major renovation of The D-Day Invasion of Normandy, the beloved gallery that has brought June 6, 1944, to life for millions of visitors for more than 25 years, with the transformed version expected to open in 2027, in time for the 83rd anniversary of D-Day.

The renewed exhibit will grow from two galleries to four across its story, following the planning, the landings and the aftermath of Operation Overlord with a clearer, more accessible narrative. Visitors can look forward to immersive environments, advanced multimedia, interactive elements, fresh scholarship and powerful artifacts collected over the past 25 years and displayed for the first time, all woven together with firsthand accounts and oral histories from veterans and the WWII generation.

The museum is partnering with Gallagher & Associates, the design firm behind its newer immersive galleries, and the project is part of its Victory’s Promise campaign to expand its educational impact. Familiar touchstones from the original 8,000-square-foot exhibit will remain, now with new depth — a celebration, right here in New Orleans, of the people at the heart of this history and of a museum still growing for future generations.
