Houston’s Planetarium Puts the Arctic Sky on the Big Screen

Happy City News has a cool new reason to look up in Houston. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is presenting Arctic: Our Frozen Planet at its Burke Baker Planetarium, a BBC Earth large-format film that carries viewers across the far north in every season. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, the film is now part of the museum’s planetarium lineup in the Museum District.

The journey moves from vast herds of caribou crossing the tundra to beluga whales, polar bears, walrus and musk oxen raising their young in one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. Filmed over several years, it celebrates the animals and Indigenous peoples who thrive there, and shows how each season completely transforms the Arctic world.

Under the planetarium dome, those icy horizons feel close enough to touch, making this an easy win for families, school groups and anyone who loves nature films with real wow factor. The museum recommends arriving a little early, pairing the screening with a wander through the permanent exhibition halls, and making a full Museum District day of it.

Showtimes rotate through the week, so check the museum’s planetarium schedule before you go and pick the screening that fits your plans. It is a chilly adventure, Houston style — no parka required.
