Los Angeles movie lovers have a joyful new world to step into this winter. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opens Hidden Worlds: The Films of LAIKA on December 12, 2026, on Level 3 in the Rolex Gallery, where it will remain on view through September 9, 2027.
The exhibition celebrates LAIKA, the award-winning studio that has revolutionized stop-motion filmmaking for two decades, marrying this venerable, hands-on art form with trailblazing technology. Visitors will revisit beloved films including Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), and Missing Link (2019) – stories loved by families around the world for their heart, humor, and astonishing craftsmanship.
What makes this visit special is going behind the scenes. The exhibition immerses visitors in LAIKA’s creative process through behind-the-scenes photography, video clips, and artwork from the films. Guests can explore up close the production design, miniature sets, props, puppets, technology, and costumes that have become the studio’s hallmarks – and see how tiny, hand-built worlds become unforgettable adventures on the big screen.
Founded in 2005 just outside Portland, Oregon, by Travis Knight, LAIKA is devoted to telling original, enduring stories. Hidden Worlds is a traveling exhibition co-produced by LAIKA and MoPOP. It is a perfect happy outing for film fans, animation students, and curious families alike – plan your visit at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles.
