Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center: Texas in Full Bloom

When Lady Bird Johnson founded her Wildflower Center in 1982, she dreamed of protecting the native plants that painted her beloved Texas. Today that dream blooms across 284 acres in southwest Austin — the University of Texas at Austin’s botanic garden and one of the most joyful places in the state each spring.

The gardens show what Texas landscapes can be: sweeping meadows of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and blackfoot daisies; a family garden where kids splash, climb and build; woodlands of live oak and Ashe juniper; and a Texas Arboretum where a “Hall of Texas Trees” gathers giants from across the state.

Year-round programs keep the calendar full — evening “Twilight Tuesdays” with live music among the flowers, plant sales in spring and fall, and nature play days for little explorers. The iconic stone water feature and the Mollie Steves Zachry Texas Arboretum make every visit feel like a small vacation.

Come in March and April for peak bluebonnet season, or any time for a peaceful walk that proves conserving native plants and pure happiness grow from the same soil.
