Somewhere between a secret garden and a storybook, Mayfield Park spreads across 23 acres in West Austin — and its most famous residents strut. Dozens of peacocks roam freely here, fanning iridescent tails across the lawns of a charming 1870s cottage as if they owned the place. In a sense, they do.
The Mayfield family gifted the estate to the city in 1971, and its cottage gardens remain lovingly tended by volunteers: palm-shaded paths, water-lily ponds with koi and turtles, and flower beds that change with the seasons. It is one of the prettiest — and completely free — photo spots in Austin.
Beyond the gardens, the Mayfield Preserve trails wind two miles through quiet woodland down toward Lake Austin, perfect for an easy nature walk minutes from downtown. Peahens shepherd their chicks in spring, and the whole park hums with birdsong.
Bring a picnic, bring a camera, and give the peacocks their royal right of way. Mayfield Park is Austin at its gentlest and most enchanting.
