Lady Bird Lake and the Boardwalk: Austin’s Favorite Front Porch

Right where downtown Austin meets the water, Lady Bird Lake offers something rare in a big city: a peaceful, motorboat-free lake made purely for people. Kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards and rowing shells glide across its calm surface from dawn to dusk, with the skyline reflecting in the water.

The Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail loops 10 miles around the lake, and its crown jewel is the Boardwalk — a smooth, floating stretch along the south shore completed in 2014 that finally closed the loop. Walkers, runners and cyclists cross it all day, pausing at the viewing decks for skyline photos.

The trail links some of Austin’s best-loved green spaces: Zilker Park, Barton Springs, Auditorium Shores and Festival Beach. At dusk, crowds gather near the Congress Avenue Bridge hoping to glimpse the famous bat colony streaming into the evening sky.

Come for a sunrise paddle, a lunchtime run or a golden-hour stroll — Lady Bird Lake is Austin’s front porch, and there’s always room for one more guest.
