San Antonio just gained a three-year treasure. Renoir to Picasso: The Robertson Family Collection is now on view at the San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 West Jones Avenue, where it will stay through June 10, 2029.
The exhibition gathers 17 works by the artists who defined European modern art between about 1870 and 1940 — Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism and Cubism — in a show full of bright outdoor canvases, intense subjective color and playful multiple perspectives.
Highlights include Pablo Picasso’s Bust of a Woman (summer 1953), Vassily Kandinsky’s Study for Autumn Landscape with Boats (1908), Fernand Léger’s Still Life (1928) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Still Life with Melon, Almonds, and Figs (1882). Two works from SAMA’s own permanent collection join the loan, and more Robertson pieces by Alexander Calder, George Rickey and Franz Kline shine in the modern and contemporary galleries upstairs.
The collection comes to San Antonio on loan from the Robertson Foundation, in honor of Julian and Josie Robertson. With nearly three years to visit, there is no excuse to miss this parade of masters.
