Math Meets Nature: Fibonacci Day Brings Spirals, Art and Music to Franklin Park Conservatory on November 22

Columbus gets to celebrate one of nature’s most beautiful patterns a day early this year. Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens hosts Math in Bloom presents Fibonacci Day on Sunday, November 22, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and the all-ages celebration is included with general admission.

The Fibonacci sequence — 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 — is the number pattern behind the spirals of sunflowers, pinecones and seashells. During the event, a mathematician and a horticulturist lead a guided tour of the Conservatory’s biomes, pointing out the plants that show these famous patterns and explaining how they help the living world grow.

The afternoon is hands-on and full of surprises. Guests can create their own Fibonacci spiral-inspired artwork, stop at a poetry station to write about the rhythms of nature, and try an interactive music station where technology translates a plant’s bio-signals into sound. The day starts even earlier with a winter birding walk, where participants learn about the Fibonacci spiral outdoors and make a suet-filled pinecone birdfeeder to take home for their feathered friends.

Math in Bloom is supported by the Simons Foundation as part of its Infinite Sums initiative, linking six botanical gardens across the country. Whether you love math, art, plants or simply discovering something new, the Conservatory at 1777 E. Broad Street is the place to be on November 22.
