The Tampa Bay History Center: 12,000 Years on the Waterfront

Tampa’s story is longer and wilder than you think — and the Tampa Bay History Center tells all 12,000 years of it from a beautiful riverfront building in the Channel District.

Three floors of galleries move from the first Floridians and Tocobaga chiefdoms through Spanish explorers, the Seminole Wars, the cigar boom that built Ybor City, Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, and the making of modern Tampa Bay. The museum’s signature films, interactive maps and the region’s largest collection of Florida artifacts keep history tactile.

Its location is the lesson plan: steps from the Cotanchobee parkland where Fort Brooke stood, beside the port that made the city.

Newcomers, start here. Natives, come be surprised by your own city.
