White Haven: Ulysses S. Grant’s Green House in St. Louis

Tucked along Grant Road in southwest St. Louis, at 7400 Grant Road, White Haven is one of the city’s happiest surprises: a bright Paris Green farmhouse where Ulysses S. Grant met his wife Julia Dent, raised his family and worked the land long before he became a Civil War general and the 18th president of the United States. Today the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site preserves the estate as a calm, green place to wander, learn and slow down.

The National Park Service protects 9.6 acres here, centered on the original home built in 1816. Rangers offer talks on the front porch at the top of each hour, the first at 10 a.m. and the last at 4 p.m., and visitors can step inside White Haven daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Inside are the family living areas, the winter kitchen and period rooms that bring the 1850s to life in warm, human detail.

Outside, a short walking path links the summer kitchen, ice house and chicken house, while Grant’s historic stable now houses a museum about the Grants and everyone, free and enslaved, who called White Haven home. Start at the visitor center with its introductory film, then enjoy the grounds at your own pace. Best of all, admission is free and no reservation is needed for individual visitors, making this an easy outing that Happy City News recommends for history lovers and curious families alike.
