Soldiers Memorial Military Museum: A Downtown Shrine to Service

Downtown St. Louis keeps its promises in stone. Soldiers Memorial Military Museum, opened in 1938 as the city’s memorial to its World War I dead, is a gleaming Art Deco landmark whose museum — operated by the Missouri Historical Society since a celebrated 2018 renovation — now honors St. Louisans who served in every American conflict.

The restored building frames powerful galleries of photographs, letters, uniforms and oral histories, while the Court of Honor across Chestnut Street lines memorials from World War II to the present in a contemplative plaza. Free to all, it is where St. Louis marks Veterans Day — and where school groups meet the city’s service history face to face.

Give it an hour on any downtown day; you’ll leave quieter and prouder.

Soldiers Memorial is at 1315 Chestnut Street. Free admission; hours at mohistory.org.
