Every fall, one of nature’s greatest migrations unfolds right in Seattle’s backyard — and this October, you can watch it happen with the help of an expert.
The Seattle Aquarium is inviting everyone to follow the salmon along the Cedar River this October. Thousands of Pacific salmon return to our local watersheds each year to spawn, an epic journey the Aquarium calls a true wildlife migration in the heart of an urban environment.
On select weekend days from 10am to 2pm, Aquarium naturalists will be stationed at viewing spots along the Cedar River in Renton and Maple Valley. They’ll answer questions, point out the fish, and share stories about the challenges salmon face and how we can all support their wellbeing. The latest dates and times are posted on the Aquarium’s website.
“Salmon are the cornerstone of our local ecosystem, which supports us all,” says Jezella Peraza, field programs and outreach coordinator at the Aquarium. “We’re lucky to be able to witness a wildlife migration in the heart of an urban environment.”
It’s a free, family-friendly outing perfect for kids, photographers, and anyone who wants to see Pacific Northwest wildlife at its most dramatic. Bring a jacket, bring your curiosity, and watch the salmon run!
