“Made in San Francisco”: de Young Announces Landmark Survey of Post-WWII Bay Area Art

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco just announced the biggest love letter to the city’s creative soul in years: Made in San Francisco, a major survey of post–World War II Bay Area art, opening at the de Young Museum on April 10, 2027 and running through October 24, 2027.

More than 100 works by over 70 artists will trace how San Francisco became a launchpad for new artists and bold new art styles — from Abstract Expressionism and Bay Area Figuration to Beat, Funk, and assemblage art. The show also examines the rich legacy of the California School of Fine Arts (later the San Francisco Art Institute), the legendary school that shaped generations of West Coast artists.

It is the story of how San Francisco shaped a generation of artists — and how that generation shaped the art world. The announcement gives art lovers a full six months to plan a spring 2027 visit to Golden Gate Park.
