San Francisco’s Legion of Honor to Host First Major U.S. Retrospective of Couturier Azzedine Alaïa

San Francisco is about to celebrate one of fashion’s true masters. On November 21, the Legion of Honor museum opens Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion, the first major retrospective in the United States dedicated to the late Tunisian-born, Paris-based couturier who redefined how clothes honor the body.

Running through April 11, 2027, the exhibition gathers some 80 garments from across Alaïa’s celebrated career, along with pieces from his remarkable historical collections that inspired his craft. Trained as a sculptor, Alaïa treated fabric the way sculptors treat clay, creating body-conscious designs that celebrated women’s natural curves and stood proudly apart from the fashion industry’s relentless calendar.

Visitors will see designs worn by icons including Tina Turner, Grace Jones, Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga, displayed throughout the museum’s special-exhibition galleries and select European art galleries. It is a rare chance to admire up close the technical mastery and devotion to craftsmanship that made Alaïa a legend.

A first-of-its-kind tribute nearly a decade after his passing, Sculpting Fashion is a genuine must-see for anyone who loves design, artistry, and the joy of beautiful things.
